Idea type: Freemium

People love using similar products but resist paying. You’ll need to either find who will pay or create additional value that’s worth paying for.

Should You Build It?

Build but think about differentiation and monetization.

Your are here

Your idea for an app for sober golfers taps into a niche market with a focus on self-improvement through golf and sobriety. Nine similar products suggest healthy competition. This puts you in the Freemium category, where users like the idea of similar products, but are not necessarily willing to pay for it. You'll need to find what people will pay for. Given that the average number of comments (7) is relatively high, there is some engagement in this area, so the core idea resonates with some people. Several similar products have design, UX, and UI as key positive differentiating factors. The criticisms of similar products are centered around pricing (users want one time payments vs subscriptions), a desire for community features, and additional platform availability.

Recommendations

  1. Since you're in the Freemium category, deeply understand the needs of sober golfers. This involves conducting user interviews and surveys to identify specific pain points and desires related to sobriety and golf. The criticisms for similar products revolve around pricing, community, and lack of platform availability, so the best thing to do would be to address these directly.
  2. Based on your user research, offer a compelling free version. This should provide genuine value to users, such as basic golf tracking, a sobriety counter, or access to a limited community forum. Make sure this free version is beautifully designed and usable as that seems to be a key differentiating factor for your competitors.
  3. Identify which users get the most value from free versions of the app. Analyze usage patterns and gather feedback from free users to understand which features they find most beneficial and what additional value they seek. Focus on the core theme of sober golf, and see what features you can add that will specifically help people in this category.
  4. Create premium features that build on the free version and provide more substantial benefits. Consider features such as advanced golf analytics, personalized coaching tips, exclusive community events, or integration with sobriety support resources. Think about how you can make these premium features worth paying for by delivering tangible results and enhanced support.
  5. Offer personalized help or consulting services. Providing one-on-one coaching or support can be a valuable premium offering. Consider charging teams rather than individuals (perhaps sober golf groups). This allows you to generate more revenue per user while providing a valuable service.
  6. Test different pricing approaches with small groups of users. Experiment with different pricing models, such as subscriptions, one-time purchases, or tiered pricing, to find the optimal balance between revenue and user adoption. Pay special attention to the negative feedback on subscription services. Perhaps a one time payment to unlock key features might be the best approach.
  7. Actively build a supportive community within your app. Implement features such as forums, chat groups, and virtual events to foster connections and provide a sense of belonging. Address some of the criticisms and suggestions for similar products and build a community feature for shared milestones
  8. Given the expressed desire for multi-platform availability, make sure you build for iOS and Android. Additionally, the integration of progressive wellness activities related to nutrition for overall wellness is another feature to think about.

Questions

  1. Given that similar apps are criticized for subscription pricing, how can you creatively monetize your app while offering significant value, perhaps through partnerships with golf courses or recovery programs?
  2. How can you leverage the community aspect to not only provide support but also to drive engagement and user retention, perhaps through golf-related challenges or sobriety milestones?
  3. Considering the niche market of sober golfers, what specific golf-related data or analytics would be most valuable to your users, and how can you integrate those features seamlessly into your app?

Pour Decision – Alcohol Tracker and Mindful Drinking Companion

14 Jul 2024 Health & Fitness

Hey there!I want to share the alcohol tracker app that I've made for iOS.The idea came to be when I decided I want to drink less, but not quit completely. I tried a bunch of solutions but I couldn't find the app quite right, so decided to build it myself. Existing apps that I've tried were either subscription-based, had a bad design/buggy, didn't come with a library of common drinks I can choose from etc. Pour Decision is my attempt to an app I wanted to exist. Hope y'all like it!Website: https://pourdecision.appApp store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/pour-decision/id6499468185

Users are intrigued by Ketohol's promise of a mild buzz without negative effects, but express skepticism and concern about untested side effects. The product seems to appeal to younger demographics, with emphasis on cost, availability, taste, and strength. Some users have adapted to the taste and find it refreshing, while others suggest enhancements like a cocktail database. The UX is praised, but there's a call for broader platform support beyond iOS. Comments also touch on broader topics like non-alcoholic support options, moderation benefits, and alcohol-related data tracking. There's interest in low-alcohol options and historical context on alcohol regulation.

Users criticized the product for its cost, limited availability, taste, and weaker buzz. Concerns were raised about the untested substance and potential side effects. The alcohol-free wine was specifically noted for poor taste, and the limited flavor options were a drawback. Users questioned the benefits of moderation and highlighted risks. Technical issues included a missing rotating PNG gallery on mobile and privacy policy concerns. The product lacks a cocktail database and sharing feature, is only available on iOS, and offers limited low alcohol beer options in the US. There's also a gap in the market for beers between 0.5% and 3.5% ABV, and regulation complicates distribution.

Cut back alcohol in a warm and supportive app

06 Oct 2023 Health & Fitness

I've always been a heavy drinker and tried multiple time to cut back alcohol, but failed every time. As a mobile developer, I had the idea to create a dedicated app to track alcohol consumption in quick and fun way. That's why I've developed Drylendar, an iOS app translated in French (I'm French) and English that allows people to track their drink every day in a beautiful calendar. To help people staying motivated, I've added medals to unlock and possibility to add friends to share calendars and positive energy. My app is available on App Store for 10 days, and it's been 215 days that I didn't drink alcohol at all, I've never felt healthier & happier!

Users praised the app's design, likening it to the 'I am sober' app, but criticized the paid monthly subscription model, suggesting a preference for a cheaper or one-time payment option. The effectiveness of Naltrexone and the Sinclair Method for addressing alcohol dependency was discussed, with personal experiences of reduced alcohol desire and fatigue with low-dose Naltrexone. Some users expressed interest in experimenting with lower dosages during activities. Kombucha was mentioned as a satisfying alternative to alcohol. The importance of counting drinks as part of the Sinclair Method was noted, and the app's appeal to those with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), which is less severe than alcoholism, was highlighted.

Users criticized the product for lacking a community feature for shared milestones, requiring a paid monthly subscription, and not offering a mobile app. There were suggestions to include widgets and a privacy checkmark, and to avoid subscription models. Additionally, there was a recommendation to focus more on AUD (Alcohol Use Disorder) rather than on alcoholism.

I made an alcohol tracker app for iOS

03 Oct 2024 Productivity

Hi everyone!I made an alcohol tracker, with all the features that I wish other apps had when I was using them. In addition to the features you'd expect from an alcohol tracker, my app offers the following:- Track water intake → remember to stay hydrated- Cocktail presets → Presets like beer, wine, tequila etc. isn't unheard of. But I wasn't able to find an app that has presets for common cocktails, which I often go for. I had to investigate what's in the cocktails and log them separately (which was quite bothersome especially while drinking at a bar, and the calorie values were still off) and there were quite some guesswork- Quick add → Log an entry with an average alcohol content with a single clickAnd I designed the typical graphs, insights, analytics screens, drink logs display etc. in a way that I find made my overall tracking experience better. What do y'all think? also, I'm thinking to add a drink calendar that shows your whole year with color coded days, green for 0 drinks, shades from green to yellow for the amount, red for over the limit etc.Other fun ideas welcome :)
