I want to create an app to discover activities across the map ...

...(potentially near you) for your free time

Confidence
Engagement
Net use signal
Net buy signal

Idea type: Run Away

Multiple attempts have failed with clear negative feedback. Continuing down this path would likely waste your time and resources when better opportunities exist elsewhere.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

The idea of an app to discover activities is in a tough spot, falling into the 'Run Away' category. This category suggests that similar attempts have failed, indicating potential challenges ahead. With 8 similar products identified, the competition is notable. Though there is medium engagement, indicating some interest, there is no signal to use or buy the product. Given this context, treading carefully and rethinking the approach is advisable before investing significant time and resources.

Recommendations

  1. Dive deep into the negative feedback from similar apps. For example, Ambulate received criticism regarding clunky interfaces and poor mobile experiences. Understand the core reasons why users didn't find value in existing solutions. Focus on the consistent failures of similar products to identify critical problem areas.
  2. Explore if your skills can be applied to a related but different problem within the leisure or activity discovery space. Consider a niche that hasn't been adequately addressed. Think about creating a product that focuses on a specific demographic or interest group.
  3. If you've already developed a prototype, assess if the underlying technology can be repurposed for a different application. Can the location-based features be adapted for a different industry? Maybe it could be repurposed for logistical or even emergency applications.
  4. Reach out to individuals who have tried similar activity discovery apps and conduct thorough interviews. Focus on understanding their unmet needs and pain points. Ask specific questions about what they wished the app could do better or differently.
  5. Before abandoning the idea, try pivoting to a hyper-local model with intensive curation and quality control. Address user feedback by improving booking system handling, UI/UX, mobile usability and transparent information and pricing. Then collect user feedback on the new version.

Questions

  1. Given the negative feedback on existing solutions, what specific, unique value proposition can your app offer to differentiate itself and attract users?
  2. How can you ensure a seamless and user-friendly experience on mobile devices, addressing the common complaints about clunky interfaces and poor mobile usability in similar apps?
  3. Considering the challenges in booking systems and user frustrations with third-party sites, how will your app facilitate direct bookings and ensure reliable transaction handling and customer support?

    • Negative use signal: 18.9%
  • Net buy signal: -7.3%
    • Positive buy signal: 1.5%
    • Negative buy signal: 8.7%

This chart summarizes all the similar products we found for your idea in a single plot.

The x-axis represents the overall feedback each product received. This is calculated from the net use and buy signals that were expressed in the comments. The maximum is +1, which means all comments (across all similar products) were positive, expressed a willingness to use & buy said product. The minimum is -1 and it means the exact opposite.

The y-axis captures the strength of the signal, i.e. how many people commented and how does this rank against other products in this category. The maximum is +1, which means these products were the most liked, upvoted and talked about launches recently. The minimum is 0, meaning zero engagement or feedback was received.

The sizes of the product dots are determined by the relevance to your idea, where 10 is the maximum.

Your idea is the big blueish dot, which should lie somewhere in the polygon defined by these products. It can be off-center because we use custom weighting to summarize these metrics.

Strollhunt - Ditch travel & tour guides, play fun city exploration games

Strollhunt is a free app to find and create games to play in the real world. It’s the fun of Pokémon Go, plus you learn about the city by playing. Strollhunt is for visitors and locals alike. Play in over 50 cities around the world on iPhone and now on Android

The Product Hunt launch received positive feedback, with users congratulating Lucas and the team on the product's launch. Several users expressed excitement about the app's potential for travel, highlighting its unique approach that combines exploration with guided experiences. One user offered connections to walking tour companies. A user wished for availability in Poland. The product was described as exceptional, driven by passion and vision.

The primary criticism is the unavailability of games in Poland, which restricts potential users' ability to try the product and hinders adoption in that market.

Scenic – explore and find interesting places along a route using GPT4

19 Jul 2023 Travel Maps

Hi HN,Made a small app because I found myself doing this manually quite a few times using GPT-4. You put in where you're starting and where you're going, and what kind of places you want to see along the way, and it'll find places and identify a reasonable(ish) path. It's very simple but it has some nice features (e.g. you can get a Google Maps link). The place features you search for can be basically anything and can be as opinionated as you'd like. This is just for fun, but please let me know if you have any suggestions!

Great prototype, suggests route recording and sharing feature.

Ambulate – Detailed Trip Planning

22 Oct 2024 Travel

Ambulate was created because planning hiking trips using spreadsheets and various map solutions got chaotic. I wanted an app to manage and map multi day trip itineraries in the outdoors/backcountry.Features - Manage itineraries - Add activities and map markers - Add routes (upload GPX or plot by hand on map) - Desktop and mobileIt is free to try (login using Google or create a user). Alternatively the slides on the home page give an idea of the UI.I'll appreciate any thoughts and feedback you care to share:)

Users find trip planning for professionals challenging, especially with contingencies and booking steps. They suggest a single site for seamless booking and appreciate features like finding hotels with specific amenities. Issues with third-party sites like booking.com are noted, including billing problems and the need for direct booking. Users desire a simple UI, fast editing, and integration with other tools. Concerns about the product's name, mobile usability, and the need for more information before account creation are raised. Comparisons with other apps and the request for a demo account indicate a mixed reception with some expressing gratitude and others finding the product unusable on mobile or lacking in features.

Users criticize booking systems for poor transaction handling, difficult booking steps, and unreliable sites with inadequate customer support. There's a lack of incentives for direct bookings and third-party airline use, with centralization issues due to upselling. Specific complaints include unclear bathtub information on Booking.com, clunky interfaces, insufficient information, and poor mobile experiences. Some products are seen as too medical or have negative name associations. Users want demos, email verification, and better UI/UX, with some calling for open-source options. Outdated content and auto-advancing slides are also problematic.

Triplista – I made an app to help users organize and plan their trips

30 Nov 2023 Travel

I used to organize my travels with Apple Notes, then I decided to start a new side-project and build something more specific, I've been testing it for about 4 months and now it's finally launched! Triplista allows you to create your trips with origin and destination - Inside each trip you can add the places you'll visit - View the places in a map - Add a budget to the places you'll visit - Get flight information (coming very soon)

Mywanderlustmap.com - chat, locations, get ticket info, upload photos

15 Nov 2023 Travel

Hi all! I recently created this Wanderlust Map based on the awesome wanderlust demo from OpenAI demo day and it's sort of taken on it's own life.I would love some feedback. You can chat, get locations, get ticket info, upload photos of places of interest to go to places, upload documents to extract data about locations, flights and chat in several different languages with build in text to speech.I recently added google auth to allow ppl to save their threads and past trips.I am looking for a co-founder and any advice on how to develop this idea.I also nabbed a few other good domains such as TravelMapGPT and Mapg.pt:D
