Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

You're entering a crowded space with your AI-powered meal planner, as evidenced by the 26 similar products we found. This puts you squarely in the 'Swamp' category, meaning many have tried this, but few have truly broken through. The low engagement (avg 1 comment) on similar products indicates a potential struggle to capture user attention. While the concept of personalized meal plans based on budget and local availability is appealing, it's crucial to understand why existing solutions haven't resonated strongly with users. You need a REALLY good hook to differentiate and avoid being just another face in the crowd. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money. Proceed with extreme caution, and with eyes wide open.

Recommendations

  1. First, conduct thorough market research to understand why existing meal planning solutions haven't achieved widespread adoption. Analyze user reviews, identify pain points, and determine unmet needs. Dive into the criticism from similar products. For instance, some users ask about gluten-free, salt-free, sugar-free meal options. Understanding these gaps is vital before investing further in development.
  2. Instead of directly competing with established players, consider focusing on a specific niche within the healthy eating market. For example, you could cater to individuals with specific dietary restrictions (e.g., vegan athletes, diabetic seniors) or those living in food deserts with limited access to fresh produce. This targeted approach can help you build a loyal user base and establish a strong brand identity.
  3. Explore opportunities to partner with existing food delivery services or grocery stores to integrate your meal planning app into their platforms. This would provide you with access to a wider audience and streamline the meal preparation process for users. Also, it might be easier to build tools for them, instead of competing against them.
  4. Before launching your app, validate your core assumptions by conducting user testing with a prototype or MVP. Gather feedback on the meal planning algorithm, user interface, and overall value proposition. Incorporate this feedback into your development process to ensure that your app meets the needs of your target audience. This also reduces the risk of building a product nobody wants.
  5. Focus on building a strong content strategy that showcases the benefits of your app and provides valuable information about healthy eating on a budget. Create blog posts, recipes, and social media content that educates and inspires users. Content is key to attracting organic traffic and establishing your app as a trusted resource.
  6. Given the comments of similar products, it's important to address the AI element by clarifying how your product differentiates itself from the existing AI recipe generators. Provide concrete examples or unique selling points to showcase the value added by your AI capabilities, as some users want to know how your tool is novel and cool.

Questions

  1. What specific, unique data sources will your AI use to determine 'locally available foods' and their real-time pricing, and how will you ensure the accuracy and reliability of this information across different geographic locations and grocery store chains?
  2. Considering the low engagement observed in similar meal planning apps, what innovative strategies will you employ to foster a vibrant user community and encourage active participation within your platform?
  3. How will you strike a balance between offering highly personalized meal plans and ensuring that your app remains accessible and user-friendly for individuals with varying levels of technical proficiency and nutritional knowledge?

The maximum is +1, which means all comments (across all similar products) were positive, expressed a willingness to use & buy said product. The minimum is -1 and it means the exact opposite.

The y-axis captures the strength of the signal, i.e. how many people commented and how does this rank against other products in this category. The maximum is +1, which means these products were the most liked, upvoted and talked about launches recently. The minimum is 0, meaning zero engagement or feedback was received.

The sizes of the product dots are determined by the relevance to your idea, where 10 is the maximum.

Your idea is the big blueish dot, which should lie somewhere in the polygon defined by these products. It can be off-center because we use custom weighting to summarize these metrics.

AI Powered Meal Planning App

Hi HN!I've been teaching myself to code for the last year or so and am pleased to launch my first (small) product into the world.Mealll uses the Anthropic API to generate meal plans for users. It allows them to select their required nutrient requirements, dietary requirements and food preferences. It then creates a customised weekly meal plan and shopping list for them.I've included a simple nutritional requirements calculator for users who might be unsure of their nutritional needs.Once users have created a meal plan, they can generate recipes for any of the meals that they're unsure how to cook. It's been a lot of fun learning to work with the different models available from Anthropic. I've found sonnet to be a great middle ground for the creation of the meal plan outline and ingredients. I'm currently using the haiku model for the generation of recipes. The big dream for this product is to help everyday people who lack the skills and knowledge to eat healthily eat more nutritious home cooked meals. For now just a couple of users would be great!I've got lots of ideas of how to improve the app but wanted to get it in the hands of users and see if this is something that can help them.
