Idea type: Swamp

The market has seen several mediocre solutions that nobody loves. Unless you can offer something fundamentally different, you’ll likely struggle to stand out or make money.

Should You Build It?

Don't build it.

Your are here

Creating an app to help people quit porn places you in a crowded and challenging market, categorized as a "Swamp." This means many similar solutions exist, but none have truly captured widespread user love or significant market share. The existence of 15 similar products confirms this high level of competition. The average number of comments on these products is low, indicating low engagement. Given this competitive landscape and the lack of strong user engagement in existing solutions, succeeding in this market requires a fundamentally different approach. Before dedicating significant time and resources, a deep dive into why current solutions haven't resonated is crucial.

Recommendations

  1. Thoroughly research why existing apps and resources designed to help people quit porn have failed to gain significant traction. Analyze user reviews, identify common pain points, and understand the unmet needs in this space. For example, look into why users feel that self-improvement apps might not work or how they address data privacy concerns, like some of the similar product discussions reveal.
  2. If you decide to proceed, identify a specific niche within the broader audience struggling with porn addiction. Focus on serving a particular demographic (e.g., young adults, specific religious groups) or addressing a unique challenge (e.g., co-occurring mental health issues, specific triggers). This targeted approach will help you differentiate your app and attract a loyal user base.
  3. Instead of directly competing with existing apps, explore opportunities to create tools and resources that support existing providers. For instance, you could develop an AI-powered content analysis tool for monitoring and filtering explicit content or a platform that connects users with qualified therapists specializing in addiction recovery. This approach allows you to leverage the existing infrastructure and build a sustainable business.
  4. Consider exploring adjacent problems that may be more promising and less competitive. For example, you could focus on developing an app that helps people manage their overall screen time and digital habits, or tools for managing specific aspects of addiction. This broader focus allows you to tap into a larger market and build a more versatile product. One example is incorporating habits tracker, or caffeine alternative tools in your platform.
  5. Given the challenges and competition in this space, carefully consider whether this is the best use of your time and resources. Evaluate your passion for the problem, your unique skills and insights, and the potential for long-term success. If the odds seem stacked against you, it may be wise to save your energy for a more promising opportunity.

Questions

  1. What specific unmet needs or pain points will your app address that existing solutions have failed to address adequately? How will you ensure that your approach is fundamentally different and more effective?
  2. How will you validate your target audience and ensure that your app resonates with their specific needs and preferences? What marketing and outreach strategies will you employ to reach your target audience effectively?
  3. What are the key metrics you will track to measure the success of your app? How will you adapt your strategy based on user feedback and market trends?

NoFap: I created an extension to block porn websites

20 Apr 2024 Chrome Extensions

The NoFap Extension is a browser tool designed to block access to pornographic websites. Unlike other blockers that require users to add URLs manually, this extension automatically bans such websites without the need for user intervention. It provides a simple and effective solution for those seeking to limit their exposure to explicit content online.

Users reported an error code indicating content filtering issues, and expressed concerns about the longevity of adult content sites. There was a mention of the product's scope, representing a small fraction of porn sites. One user recommended Mullvad's DNS servers as an alternative solution. Questions were raised about the product's ability to block platforms like Twitter, and at least one comment was flagged for review.

Users criticized the product for triggering content filters, having a small representation of adult sites, suffering from significant link rot and ad-heavy pages, and for being unclear about its ability to block Twitter.

28 Day Dopamine Detox Tool

16 Jul 2023 Health & Fitness

Hey lovely HN people :)A few months ago I listened to a podcast about doing a 4 week dopamine detox for addiction recovery. They talked about how the first 2 weeks are the hardest, but that if you can make it through that, things get easier in week 3 and 4.When they put it that way it actually sounded doable. Just 2 weeks? I can push through that. So I tried it for myself and yeah, it was pretty much right on.That inspired me to make a little web app that gives a little structure and guidance to this process.I hope it's useful to someone :) And I'm eager to hear what you think!

Wants to change start date for detox.

Can't reset detox start date.
